As a leader on the Board of Directors, what is your personal mission for success?

To learn from my mistakes and impart my learnings onto the team.  My feeling is that you always need to try out new ideas and approaches. They may not always work but you will definitely learn something from and can take those learnings into other areas of your work.  By sharing these ideas and learnings with your team it only encourages them to come up with new ideas, think outside the box which and share their learnings as well.

What advice would you give someone entering the marketing field today?

To get as much hands on learning as possible.  There are so many great internship and volunteer opportunities offered that can provide the hands on learning experience for you to determine if Marketing is right for you and which field within it you enjoy most.

What is most rewarding about your job (what makes it all worthwhile)?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is always learning something new.  Even after being with my company for 12 years, I still found myself learning something new which kept my job interesting and rewarding.  The teamwork and collaboration that I have done throughout my career is another rewarding experience.

What is the biggest challenge you face in marketing?

How to break through a crowded marketplace. There is so much noise in the marketplace between emails, blogs, social media, videos that it is hard to compete and grab the consumers attention to get your message out and be remembered.  Even having personalized content it is difficult for a brand to break through the noise and stand out.

What’s the next skill or knowledge set you want to add to your repertoire to make you a better marketer?

The digital space is changing at a breakneck speed and I’d like to gain more insight into what are the next big things that will transform the industry.

What is the career accomplishment that makes you proudest?

When I first started working on a project, the revenue numbers had been in the red the prior five years.  Working with the team we were able to strategize on how to make the product stronger and where we could cut back on some padding.  Lucky for me, the team I was a part of wanted the program to succeed as much as I did and we were able to turn around revenue to the black that first year and has continued to grow ever since.  Teamwork was the key to the success!

How do you keep a healthy work/life balance?

With my daughter will be going off to college soon so it’s important to me to spend as much time with her that I can and that she’ll allow me too :).  I typically get in my workouts early in the morning (at times before the sun has even risen) so that I can start my day fresh and motivated. From there it’s a matter of setting goals and prioritizing and not beating myself up if I’m not able to accomplish what I set out that day.

What is a fun fact about you that most people wouldn’t know?

My love for ’80s music. I am obsessed with the music from the 1980’s decade and have been going to lots of concerts recently that feature many of my favorite artists. I live near the Wellmont Theater and the teen heartthrob Rick Springfield was performing. I reserved orchestra seats and dragged a few of my girlfriends to see it.  During the show he came out to the audience where we were sitting and we were able to get some pictures with him.  A highlight of the year so far 🙂
